James Madison University Athletics said the JMU men’s soccer team defeated Coastal Carolina 1-0 Friday, Oct. 2, in Harrisonburg, with Henok Tilahun scoring the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute. The Sun Belt match was played at 7 p.m., according to the announcement.
JMU Athletics reported that the teams were scoreless at halftime and Tilahun’s header came in the second half. Chris Niblock assisted on the goal, the announcement said.
The Dukes outshot Coastal Carolina 14-11, but the Chanticleers had more shots on goal, 5-2, according to JMU Athletics. Manuel Lolas led JMU with four shots, while Hákon Rake had three and Niblock had two, the announcement said.
JMU goalkeeper Erik Jaspers made five saves and recorded his fourth shutout of the season, including his second in Sun Belt play, according to the athletics department. The win put JMU at 4-4-2 overall and 2-0-1 in Sun Belt play, while Coastal Carolina stood at 1-4-4 overall and 0-1-2 in the conference, JMU Athletics reported.
