James Madison punter Patrick Rea was named to the Ray Guy Award’s “Ray’s 8” for Week 5, James Madison University Athletics announced Monday, Oct. 5, from Harrisonburg.
Rea punted three times for 142 yards in JMU’s 45-17 win over Marshall on Oct. 3, averaging 47.3 yards per punt, according to the announcement. He placed two punts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line and had a season-long 59-yard punt.
Through the season, Rea had 18 punts for a 43.5-yard average, which the announcement said ranked No. 28 nationally. Seven punts landed inside the 20, and three traveled at least 50 yards. JMU Athletics also said he was named Sun Belt Special Teams Player of the Week on Sept. 21.
The other players named to this week’s list were Jakob Anderson of Rutgers, Hunter Green of Washington, Bryan Hansen of West Virginia, Will Karoll of Texas Tech, Jackson Ross of Tennessee, Daniel Sparks of Virginia and Oliver Straw of UAB, JMU Athletics said. Fans can vote for the Ray Guy Award’s Punter of the Week at rayguyaward.com, according to the announcement. The Augusta Sports Council has presented the award annually to college football’s most outstanding punter since 2000, the organization said.
