James Madison University said two student exhibitions are now on view in the new Carrier Library Art Galleries in Harrisonburg, following an Oct. 22 reception celebrating their opening.
According to JMU, the second-floor Updike Gallery features “A Third Space: Making Place,” an exhibition of work by 10 Architectural Design students who took part in the American Institute of Architects Virginia Prize Challenge in February 2026. The students imagined a welcoming, flexible community hub in Bridgewater, Virginia, and their designs are displayed in glass frames along the gallery wall, the announcement said.
The library’s Ground Floor Gallery features “Exquisite Corpse,” a collection of ceramics, fibers, metals, photography, printmaking and sculpture by more than 75 Studio Art students, JMU said. The exhibition takes inspiration from a surrealist collaborative game and explores how ideas, images, materials and individual contributions intersect, according to the announcement.
JMU said the galleries are intended as academic workspaces where students can gain experience in exhibition development, curatorial practice, interdisciplinary collaboration and professional presentation. The announcement did not specify how long the exhibitions will remain on view or provide visiting hours.
