What the measure does
Today, a person convicted of a felony loses the right to vote unless the Governor restores it. A court can also take away voting rights because of incapacity. This amendment would restore voting rights automatically after a person is released from prison for a felony, and a court could take away a person’s right to vote only after finding that the person cannot understand voting.
What the result means for Harrisonburg
A yes vote means the Constitution would protect the right to vote, restore voting rights after release from felony incarceration, and limit the court rule to people found not to understand voting.
What happens next
These results are unofficial. They become final when election officials certify them at the canvass, and totals can still change a little as remaining mailed and provisional ballots are counted.
